Farewell Tribute to Doolittle’s Raiders, April 17-20, 2013, Fort Walton Beach, Florida
Members of the Greatest Generation. Pictured from left to right are Shaker Heights resident and widows of veterans of World War II: Carol Powell, Joan Trefts, Mary Lou Weaver, Ann Coan, Susan Versenyi, and Vera Komp. These women participated in the city’s Memorial Day parade to honor those who served in WWII. Joseph Degenfelder arranged for their appearance in the 2015 Memorial Day parade and Mayor Leiken spoke on behalf of all veterans.
The graphic at the feet of the women is a commemoration of the thousands of Chinese citizens who helped the downed American flyers in China on April, 1942, many of whom lost their own lives in protecting them. Accompanying the art is a letter from Ohioan, Lt. Robert Meder, who was part of the Doolittle Raiders and was shot down, captured, and died in a Japanese prison. His letter was written prior to the raid and is included as an honor to his fellow raiders and to all who served our country
